What is Wellness & Mental Health?

Words like "health", "wellness" "wellbeing" and "mental health" have become common vinacular, but what do these concepts even mean? It is often believed that feeling "okay" and having "no big issues" means that we are feeling and functioning at our best. This is not always true!
If we are used to feeling down, stressed, and anxious, we may come to believe that this is our "normal" and what wellbeing and health look and feel like. It may take a major life event, trauma or transition to realize that the way that we have been going about things, isn't really serving us very well.
The World Health Organization defines wellness as
"a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.”
Difficulty sleeping, eating, low mood, lack of motivation, lack of patience, and relationship challenges, can go unacknowledged as being related to a lack of overall wellbeing.
In a world that wants to idealize concepts like just "thinking positively", "letting go", and "moving on", the feelings that we are truly experiencing become invalidated. This does not mean that they have gone away, it means that we learn to become effective at denying our own experiences. These feelings get repressed in our system and can show up as the symptoms mentioned above. While getting to a more postive and helathy place can be a valuable goal, skipping over why we are feeling the way we do currently, can sabotage our effots. If you have ever had the experience of upset emotions overriding your best attempts at responding and behaving diffently ...you know what I am talking about!
My goal as your therapist is to support you, exactly as you are and percisely where you are at in life. We will work together to develop a deeper understanding of you as a whole and complete person, without ignoring the personal lived experiences which have led you here.
Why Seek Counselling?
Life can be a joyful, peaceful and fufilling journey, however depending on our unique experiences in life, it may not always feel that way. In fact, it may never feel that way. Despite all of our personal knowledge, experience and strengths, we may still feel as though we are not living life in the way that we would like.
Counselling is a process that supports personal explorarion, growth and healing in a way that makes sense for you. No two people are exactly the same, and your process is unique to you!
The process of counselling works to untangle the challenges, confusion, overwhelm, and uncomfortable feelings that you may be experiencing.

Individual Therapy
Life can sometimes feel overwhelming and difficult to navigate on our own. Our feelings (or lack of expressed feelings) can lead us to experience such things as difficulty sleeping and eating, challenges at our jobs, and in our relationships, as well a general sense of unhappiness. Working with a therapist can help to make sense of the challenges of life and create a smoother path for moving forward.

Family Therapy
The most influential and important attachments that we form, begin in childhood. The quality of these early attachments, become our internal roadmap, serving as the guide that dictates the way in which we are able to relate to and bond with others throughout our lives. Therapy can serve as a way to gain clarity, understanding, and a sense of peace around how we relate to those who we consider to be our family.
